Nuestro laboratorio está dedicado a comprender los procesos biológicos que modelan la vida en los ambientes acuáticos. Mediante la integración de la biología marina, la genética, la genómica, la ecología y la biotecnología, investigamos cómo los organismos acuáticos se adaptan, evolucionan y responden a desafíos ambientales y biológicos, tanto en ecosistemas naturales como en sistemas influenciados por la actividad humana como la acuicultura.

1. Domesticación y adaptación de organismos acuáticos a ambientes cambiantes

En esta línea de investigación estudiamos los mecanismos genéticos, genómicos, fisiológicos y evolutivos que permiten a los organismos acuáticos adaptarse a los desafíos ambientales y a los procesos de domesticación. Nos interesan especialmente rasgos relacionados con el crecimiento, la reproducción, la resistencia a enfermedades, la tolerancia a la hipoxia, la respuesta al estrés ambiental y la resiliencia frente al cambio climático.

¿Cómo lo hacemos? Aplicamos análisis de genética cuantitativa, estudios de asociación genómica (GWAS), selección genómica, secuenciación de genoma completo (WGS), análisis transcriptómicos (RNA-seq), genómica de poblaciones y caracterización fisiológica de rasgos adaptativos. Además, evaluamos las interacciones genotipo × ambiente y los mecanismos moleculares que sustentan la adaptación a condiciones ambientales cambiantes.

2. Salud y resiliencia de organismos acuáticos frente a desafíos ambientales y biológicos

En esta línea investigamos las interacciones entre hospedadores, patógenos, microbiota y ambiente para comprender los mecanismos que determinan la salud, la resistencia a enfermedades y la resiliencia de los organismos acuáticos. Nos interesa particularmente evaluar el impacto de patógenos, coinfecciones, estresores ambientales y factores asociados al cambio climático sobre la respuesta inmune y el desempeño de los organismos.

¿Cómo lo hacemos? Realizamos desafíos experimentales con patógenos, evaluaciones de eficacia de vacunas, análisis del microbioma, caracterización de la respuesta inmune, estudios transcriptómicos (RNA-seq), experimentos de cultivo celular y análisis de genómica funcional. Integramos herramientas de microbiología e inmunología con metodologías modernas de genómica, biotecnología y bioinformática para identificar los mecanismos que promueven la salud y la resiliencia de los organismos acuáticos.

3. Origen y evolución temprana de la vida en ambientes extremos

Investigamos el origen de la vida, la evolución de los primeros organismos y los límites de la vida en ambientes extremos. Nuestro trabajo se centra en tapetes microbianos, estromatolitos y ecosistemas hipersalinos del sur de la Patagonia, particularmente en Torres del Paine y Tierra del Fuego, los cuales constituyen análogos modernos de los ambientes presentes en la Tierra primitiva.

¿Cómo lo hacemos? Combinamos estudios de terreno, monitoreo ambiental, ecología microbiana, biología molecular, genómica, metagenómica, filogenética y bioinformática para investigar la diversidad, función y evolución de las comunidades microbianas que habitan ambientes extremos. Asimismo, utilizamos estos sistemas como modelos para comprender los procesos de adaptación, resiliencia y los límites de la vida en la Tierra.
