Dr. José Gallardo Matus. Professor of genetics and applied genomics at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso.
I am interested in understanding how aquatic organisms adapt, evolve, and thrive in changing environments through the application of genetics, genomics, and biotechnology.
Our research focuses on three main areas: (1) domestication and adaptation of aquatic organisms to changing environments, (2) health and resilience of aquatic organisms facing environmental and biological challenges, and (3) the origin and early evolution of life in extreme environments. By integrating approaches from evolutionary biology, genetics, genomics, microbiology, immunology, physiology, and aquaculture, we seek to understand the mechanisms that allow life to persist under diverse and often challenging conditions.
We are always interested in welcoming motivated undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and collaborators from diverse disciplines. If you are passionate about evolution, adaptation, genomics, aquatic health, environmental change, or sustainable aquaculture, we would be delighted to hear from you and explore opportunities to join our team.
Currently, I teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in genetics, genomics, biostatistics, evolutionary biology, and their applications to marine biology and aquaculture.
PhD in Biotechnology offered jointly by Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso and the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María.
Master in Microbiological Sciences offered by Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso.
PhD in Aquaculture offered jointly by Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, the Universidad de Chile and Universidad Católica del Norte.
Marine Biology an undergraduate program offered by Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso.
Our research group is committed with effective scientific communication and training new scientists and professionals, with the support of different research agencies (ANID CHILE, OCDE, STINT SWEDEN) and with the sponsorship of the Chilean Genetics Society.
Started in 2011, our genetics training portfolio has recently expanded to genomics and biostatistics. It contains from short course to postgraduate diploma (Training opportunities here).
